November 11, 2018, will mark the 100th anniversary of the great armistice that silenced the guns of World War I. To honor that historic event, the Texas World War I Centennial Commemoration Association (TXWWICCA), Texas State Historical Association (TSHA), and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) announce the 100 Years/100 Schools initiative for November 2018. For more information, see the press release.
Educators are encouraged to organize Veterans Day events with World War I programming for their schools and youth groups to help students understand and appreciate this important part of our history. Afterwards, organizers will have the opportunity to share details and photographs of their event with us, and in recognition the first one hundred schools will receive a 100 Years/100 Schools WWI Centennial Packet consisting of:
- a formal participation certificate endorsed by state and national organizations
- an official state of Texas WWI centennial commemorative coin
- a special WWI edition of THC's Medallion magazine
- educational materials and the chance to win a grand prize
It’s never too early to start planning for this once-in-a-lifetime event!
