On the evening of April 13, 2013, the Texas Historical Commission and Fort McKavett State Historic Site will host its Spring Star Party. The star party begins at dusk and the fort's gates will remain open until 10:30 p.m. We invite everyone to come out early and stay late to enjoy an entertaining evening at Fort McKavett.
Amateur astronomers from the Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society in Houston will be on hand with their telescopes. There will be a wide varity of sizes and styles of telescopes that you can look through to see planets, nebulas, star clusters, and galaxies. There will be an astronomer presentation in the fort's school house, beginning at 5 p.m. We encourage the public to walk the telescope field just before sunset to see the different types of telescopes and talk with their owners.
The star party is dependent upon weather and could be cancelled due to clouds or bad weather. On the afternoon of the star party, please feel free to contact the fort at 325.396.2358 for a status update. Please park in the parking lot and follow the red lights to the observing field. Bring a red flashlight. Red cellophane will be available to cover white light flashlights. Please, no white lights at the telescopes.
