Preserve the Legacy of the Lone Star State at Real Places 2018

Texas is a great state—great in size, population, personality, and most importantly, in legacy. Fortunately, Texas has a vast network of individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting and preserving its historic places. The Real Places 2018 conference brings these communities together to focus on preserving, revitalizing, and experiencing the Texas mystique. Registration is now open for the January 10–12 conference in Austin.

Real Places 2018 is presented by the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in partnership with the Friends of the THC, Texas Heritage Trails Regions, and Texas Land Title Association. Featured speakers include noted Texas writer Joe Nick Patoski, preservation economist Donovan Rypkema, social preservationist Dr. Andrea Roberts, and preservation consultant Franklin Vagnone. Featured entertainers include Ray Benson from Asleep at the Wheel and the Peterson Brothers. Attendees will learn best practices and strategies for promoting their community’s historic places, while connecting with colleagues from County Historical Commissions, Main Street programs, local governments, chambers of commerce, convention and visitor bureaus, preservation organizations, historic sites, and travel industry experts. Topics featured will include using digital tours to improve visitor experiences, computer security, past and future trends of the design and construction professions, and promoting commemorations and anniversaries. Along with heritage tourism content, Real Places 2018 will provide technical training for new Texas Main Street managers and board members, as well as Certified Local Government staff. The THC’s award-winning Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program will present its annual Texas Courthouse Stewardship Workshop to county officials and facilities managers.
