AUSTIN, Texas —
In honor of Preservation Month, the Texas Historical Commission’s (THC) Texas Main Street Program and Town Square Initiative announce the launch of DowntownTX.org—a revolutionary web application designed to connect potential investors to an inventory of development opportunities in Texas’ historic downtowns
The first of its kind, DowntownTX.org is an online building inventory for Texas downtowns featuring historic property listings. DowntownTX.org showcases available downtown properties to engage potential investors, entrepreneurs, developers, residents, and anyone else who aspires to run a business, own a building, or live downtown.
DowntownTX.org boasts two map-based user interfaces. The public interface promotes investment opportunities and historic building information, highlights incentives, provides a direct connection to the correct local contacts, and clarifies the local development process. A user-friendly design makes it easy to scan the entire state and provides the ability to search parameters no other online real estate search tool offers. For example, properties can be filtered by National Register designation to direct interested historic real estate developers to properties eligible for the state and federal historic tax incentive programs. An administrative interface displays a tailored dashboard, allowing each community to customize their homepage to manage building and business data internally.
“The Lone Star State's historic downtowns offer value for investors and authentic experience for businesses and customers,” said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the THC. “Our new service will help attract significant reinvestment and rehabilitate historic buildings in Texas’ downtowns.”
Cities across the state will help celebrate the launch of DowntownTX.org by hosting “Imagine the Possibilities” tours—open-house exhibits of vacant or underutilized properties presenting investment opportunities for real estate developers, investors, residents, business owners, entrepreneurs, and anyone who has ever “imagined” themselves running a business or owning property downtown. Tour attendees can obtain additional information on downtown development and business resources at a central gathering point.
At this time, there are about 20 cities online. Additional Texas Main Street cities and Certified Local Government communities will be added throughout 2017. The project was made possible by the Still Water Foundation, the THC’s Certified Local Government program, and the Friends of the THC.
