Request a Determination of Eligibility

The Texas Historical Commission utilizes the National Register criteria in determining the historical significance of properties in Texas, regardless of whether formal listing is desired or required. The THC’s determination of eligibility is based upon review of materials submitted, including:

  • Current color photographs of the property or district
    • For districts, include photos of representative properties, both historic and nonhistoric
  • Date of construction and other significant dates (such as dates of alterations)
  • Overview of the property or district's history, including physical changes during after the historic period
  • Biographies of significant persons, if applicable
  • Current and historic maps and plans
    • For individual buildings and small complexes under single ownership, identify the original footprint and additions of each building, along with the dates of construction
  • For districts, include a map indicating proposed boundaries.
  • Copies of historic photos

These materials may be combined into a single PDF document.

Electronic documents may be submitted in lieu of hard copies with prior approval from the National Register Coordinator. Large files (over 10 MB) may have to be uploaded to a third-party file-sharing service.
