2015 Story of Texas Workshop: Connecting Educators and Audiences

Opening panel discusses ways to connect to teachers.

On September 21, 2015, the Bullock Texas State History Museum (Bullock Museum) and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) hosted a workshop to highlight practical ways to improve education outreach efforts.

Workshop content was developed based on needs expressed by County Historical Commissions, museum profiessionals, and historic sites educators.

Workshop Recap

10:00 AM: Opening Panel––Connecting to educators and students––Bullock Museum staff joined by representatives from school districts and service providers to discuss how museums and historic sites can create programming and resources that best serve teachers and students.

12:30 PM: Educator Outreach––Learn about the Texas State History Association’s resources for planning history programs and how they engage with students and teachers across Texas. 

12:30 PM: The Value of Evaluation, Revealed––Learn how to 
harness the power of public value and the importance of aligning your programs with community needs and interests. 

12:30 PM & 1:45 PM: Walk-n-Talk––Enjoy an interactive tour of the Bullock’s Texas History Galleries that discusses interpretation strategies and age-appropriate delivery methods.

1:45 PM: Fundraising––Join speakers from Humanities Texas and the Texas Commission on the Arts to learn more about how their organizations can help to develop, implement and fund humanities and arts-based programs across the state.

1:45 PM: Youth & Families––Hear how The Contemporary Austin 
created the Teen Council, a leadership arts program that serves as an advisory council, as well as ambassadors for teens, within the museum and community. Learn about the Bullock Museum's experiences with a family advisory council, and how getting in touch with the community can help improve your programmatic offerings. 

3:00 PM––Small Group Discussions––Attendees participate in two,
30-minute discussion groups to continue conversations initiated during workshop sessions or to address new aspects of workshop content. Group leaders may include staff from the Bullock Museum, Texas Historical Commission, Texas State Historical Association, and Humanities Texas.
