History

The Continental Gin Company, famous for producing advanced cotton gins, constructed an industrial complex in Dallas beginning in 1888. Considered one of the most visible reminders of the cotton industry in Texas, the Continental Gin Company complex was constructed in three phases. The last phase of construction occurred in 1914 and included the “rather fancy office building” of the company located at 3333 Elm Street. The Continental Gin Company Complex is an excellent example of late-19th and early-20th century industrial architecture, pairing industrial utility with classicism.

Rehabilitation Project

This particular part of the complex—the office building and the utilitarian warehouse extension behind—was subdivided and rehabilitated into modern loft apartments during this project. One of the unique features of this apartment complex is that the units in the office building retain their upscale finished character, with plaster walls and crown molding, whereas units in the industrial portion of the building exhibit exposed brick walls, concrete columns, and exposed systems. This popular apartment complex also includes amenities such as a fitness center and an outdoor swimming pool.
