The Rand Building was designed by the Fort Worth firm Sanguinet and Staats for the department store Wolff & Marx. The store, which operated here for 52 years, offered several features such as an infirmary and nursery, a Japanese tea room, and a convention hall accommodating 2,000 people. Wolff & Marx closed in 1965 and the building was unoccupied until the early 1980s, when the San Antonio Conservation Society stepped in to ensure the building’s long-term preservation.

Rehabilitation Project

The Rand Building is now the home of Geekdom, Google Fiber, and other high-tech startup companies—these new introductions have put San Antonio on the map in the 21st-century startup world. This rehabilitation comprises an ongoing series of phases as the owners renovate the building one portion at a time. The current phase focused on finish-out of the third and fourth floors for the new offices of Google Fiber, similar in design to other floors of the building previously rehabilitated in earlier phases. In the most extensive previous phase, exterior brick and terra cotta were cleaned and repaired, missing decorative elements were recreated, and the original windows were repaired. Apart from future retail spaces at the ground floor, this most recent phase, certified in May 2017, marks the completion of the interior rehabilitation.
