INTERNSHIP JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Archeology Division of the Texas Historical Commission (THC) is currently working on the analysis, curation and publication of collections recovered from the excavations of La Salle’s ship La Belle and the site of his colony on Garcitas Creek; which later became the first location of the Presidio La Bahia in the 1720s. This internship presents an opportunity for students to become familiar with standard laboratory, analysis and curation tasks associated with archeological site collections, while working with a unique assemblage of Native American, French, and Spanish colonial material culture.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

In general, interns will be expected to assist the THC in the following tasks:

  1. Cataloguing collections
  2. Labeling and repackaging the collections in acceptable curatorial format
  3. Updating the existing La Belle and Fort St. Louis/Presidio La Bahia artifact databases
  4. Assistance with analysis and research for project publications

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Coursework or prior experience in an archeological field or laboratory setting is preferred, though not required. Applicants should be familiar with Microsoft Office applications, and experience with Access is particularly valuable.

 

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants should be enrolled at an institution of higher learning in an undergraduate or graduate anthropology degree program, or closely related field such as history or museum studies.
