Systematically examining and comparing modern and historical maps and aerial photographs for the presence of historical cemeteries that may not be mapped on modern maps or in the THC Atlas for borderlands in South Texas. Going through historical and modern newspaper archives for mentions of cemeteries or the discovery of graves/human remains during construction. Online research of other resources that may include death certificates, deeds, verifying findagrave.com records, and corresponding with County Historical Commissions. Mapping lost cemetery locations with KML files in Google Earth. Writing up a short report detailing methodology and results at the end of the internship. This internship will require an internet connection.

Complies with all agency Internship Program Policies and Procedures.


Receive listing of cemeteries from THC Cemmetery Program. Use web-based archives to collect additional data and confirm location accuracy. Specifically, compare historical and modern USGS topographic maps to identfiy cemeteries that do not appear on more recent maps. Work with Cemetery Program to update the cemeteries layer of the THC Atlas.


Rudimentary understanding of Google Earth and other online aerial imagery providers, online archival research, the Office Suite and particularly Excel, and map-reading.



Applicants should be enrolled at an institution of higher learning in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Applications will be accepted from currently-enrolled college students who are sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students. Recent graduates with a bachelor seeking or have applied to a masters program may also apply.
