Plantation house dining room decorated for Christmas

We all look forward to many cherished holiday traditions with family and friends this time of year. On Saturday, November 30, come explore holiday traditions that allowed interactions between families on plantations, like, Varner-Hogg, that would not be possible during the rest of the year. Reflecting, especially, on the traditions of enslaved people during the holidays gives us a chance to honor their strength and ingenuity, despite their circumstances, in building a sense of community.

This program, part of Varner-Hogg’s new Family Folkways series, is designed for ages 8 to 11, but all ages are welcome. We’ll discover many traditions we continue to enjoy today plus some unique to plantation life. We’ll meet in the Kitchen of the Main House for a brief program and then, walk to the visitors center to make a mini-banjo ornament. Choose from program sessions at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

Reservations are NOT required; however, space is limited to the first 20 people. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
