Historically Well: Convict Labor Conditions
Wednesday, February 24, 2021
7 p.m., via Zoom
Following the Civil War, Black Codes were enacted that could send freedmen to prison for petty crimes, like, loitering, and then, lease them out as convicts often to the same plantations from which they had been freed. On February 24, 2021, we’ll examine inspection reports from the state of Texas that detail the conditions – from adequate to horrific – in which African American convict laborers found themselves on the former Patton plantation in the late 1870s and 1880s. Recommended for ages 13+. Click on the program title to register and receive the Zoom webinar link.
