During an early veterans meeting at the Confederate Reunion Grounds, a local man and former slave named Nicholas Blain presented a speech about his experiences accompanying his Confederate master and the 7th Texas Infantry during the Civil War. Who was this unique individual and what brought him here? Why did Blain and other former slaves attend Confederate veterans reunions, and what was the nature of the relationships that he shared with these many white veterans?
