Exhibit will be on display July 19, 2014–September 21, 2014.
Americans will once again cast their votes this coming November. To celebrate this Constitutional freedom, the exhibition Running for Office: Candidates, Campaigns, and the Cartoons of Clifford Berryman will be featured to highlight the path to the White House in a timeless and entertaining way—through cartoons.
Berryman’s historical illustrations transcend decades to comment on the present campaign process, from the initial decision to run to the final election results. As an editorial cartoonist for the Washington Postand the Washington Evening Star during the first half of the 20th century, Berryman became a Pulitzer-prize winner and one of the most celebrated and respected political cartoonists of his time.
Forty-four prints of Berryman’s exceptional pen-and-ink drawings are on exhibition. Although faces and personalities change, the artist’s cartoons illustrate how the political process in our democracy has remained remarkably consistent. The sketches provide relevant commentary and fascinating insight into current campaigns and elections.
Running for Office was created by the National Archives with the support of the Foundation for the National Archives and organized for travel by Humanities Texas. Additional information for the exhibition can be found on the National Archives web page.
This program is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
