CHC Cemetery Projects

This map project was produced by Preservation Scholar Jason Rivas as part of his summer 2019 internship.

Each year, County Historical Commissions (CHCs) submit an annual report of their activities to the Texas Historical Commission. Cemeteries represent an important part of Texas history. The map below highlights the work selected CHCs took on in 2018 to preserve, document, or bring awareness to cemeteries across Texas. Click on the location dots to learn more about these stories, which are excerpted directly from each CHC's 2018 annual report.

In recent years, these annual reports have identified an increasing number of CHCs actively involved in cemetery preservation. In 2019, the THC’s Cemetery Preservation Program completed a study project to better understand the full range of our CHCs’ cemetery-related activities and to identify the ways THC can best support CHCs in their efforts. Staff is using the information collected to develop workshops, guidance documents, and other programming designed to improve the capacity of CHCs to develop and carry out effective cemetery preservation programs. Exceprts from the study project are available here

Use the Texas Historic Sites Atlas to see how many cemeteries are in your county, where they are located, and which ones are designated a Historic Texas Cemetery.
