Formed from Lamar and Nacogdoches counties; created on March 25, 1846 and organized on July 13, 1846. Named in honor of the pioneer Hopkins family, which came to Texas from Kentucky and Indiana. County seat: Tarrant from 1846 to 1858, then Sulphur Springs.
